If the people just work hard for the gold star they don't give it to them they have to work hard without trying to get it.

They call people names that they should not say in front of younger kids. The words the people say in the town can hard some of the other people which cause arguments. They will call Taylor a brat a lot of times.
Social sanctions are rewards or punishments to encourage conformity to norms. The punishment they will give will be somthing the people who are getting punished do not like. The rewards are the gold star or being the upper class is a reward for the team the finishes first. Greg and his friend decided to not work in the show down so that the girls will work more instead of not doing anything. They have a hard time getting to pick who the winner of the gold star is.
